Glass Innovation on San Francisco's Waterfront
Passaic, NJ - March 22, 2005 - A bold design creating two floors of conference space with 23' lengths of Bendheim's LINIT U-Profile glass proved an innovative methodof bringing light into the inner core of the San Francisco headquarters of AMB Property Corporation. To provide the translucent mezzanine, the team from SMWM Architects had to overcome significant historical landmark and seismic constraints at the coveted Pier 1 landmark.
The renovation of Pier 1, originally built in 1932 as a sugar warehouse, sparked the rehabilitation of the rundown Embarcadero, and served as the turning point in the development of the now-popular waterfront district. Recognition of the Pier 1 project includes the Small-Scale Rehabilitation Award for Excellence from the Urban Land Institute (ULI) and selection as an AIA/DOE Top Ten Green Project. Pier 1 was the first American project to ever win a prize from the British Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), garnering both the Outstanding Achievement Award - Best Building Conservation and the People's Choice Award.
This high profile project, glazed by U.S. Glass & Aluminum, Inc., was the first application of Bendheim Wall Systems' LINIT U-Profile glass in a building listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Recent projects awarded to Bendheim Wall Systems, Inc. include the Diller Scofidio + Renfro designed Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston and the Steven Holl/Rogers Marvel designed Pratt Institute-Higgins Hall in New York. The Bendheim LINIT U-Profile glass system eliminates the need for most vertical and intermediate horizontal framing members. The translucent, structural glazing system meets or exceeds most project design criteria providing light, function, and clean design.
S.A. Bendheim Company, Inc. was founded in 1927 as an importer and distributor of specialty glass products. From its inception, Bendheim has worked together in partnership with the Lamberts glass factory, founded 1889 in Germany. Today Bendheim Wall Systems, Inc. and Lamberts are bringing LINIT U-Profile glass from Lamberts' environment friendly, state-of-the-art factory to North America.
