Art Meets Science for a San Francisco Parking Experience

Passaic, NJ - April 4, 2005 - Inspired by a DNA bar code, carefully spaced channels of Bendheim's LINIT U-Profile glass create an airy, artistic pattern at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Mission Bay Campus parking garage. The unique aesthetic of Stanley Saitowitz/Natoma Architects maintains the biomedical science-based design concept through the arrangement of over 1,500 channels of Bendheim Wall Systems glass and photovoltaic panels.

Founded in 1873, UCSF is San Francisco's oldest public university and is one of the leading biomedical research and health science education centers in the world. The nine-level, 822-space parking garage built on this former salt marsh serves as an entrance to this prime 43-acre medical/educational campus located south of downtown San Francisco. The development of this research campus is the cornerstone of the larger Catellus Development Corporation housing and biotechnology project, the city's largest urban re-development undertaking since the building of Golden Gate Park.

This high profile project, installed by US Glass & Aluminum Inc., is the first application of Bendheim Wall Systems' U-Profile glass in a parking structure in California. Recent projects awarded to Bendheim Wall Systems, Inc. include the Steven Holl/Rogers Marvel designed Pratt Institute-Higgins Hall in New York and the Cesar Pelli/Architectural Alliance designed Minneapolis Public Library. The Bendheim LINIT U-Profile glass system eliminates the need for most vertical and intermediate horizontal framing members. The translucent, structural glazing system meets or exceeds most project design criteria, providing light, function and clean design.

S.A. Bendheim Company, Inc. was founded in 1927 as an importer and distributor of specialty glass products. From its inception, Bendheim has worked together in partnership with the Lamberts glass factory, founded 1889 in Germany. Today Bendheim Wall Systems, Inc. and Lamberts are bringing LINIT U-Profile glass from Lamberts' environment friendly, state-of-the-art factory to North America.
